National Growth Fund Recognizes Impact of Oncode Accelerator: €123 Million in Follow-up Funding Awarded
Utrecht, The Dutch National Growth Fund has issued a positive recommendation for a second funding round of €123 million for the Oncode Accelerator program, which was confirmed by the Dutch Cabinet today. This recognition confirms confidence in the program’s approach and impact, which focuses on accelerating and innovating the development of new cancer therapies.
The Netherlands is among the global leaders in cancer research. However, the development of new cancer therapies typically takes four to six years before reaching patients in early clinical trials. Moreover, this early phase of drug development carries significant risks. Yet, there are clear opportunities to improve this process. Arnoud Huisman, CEO of the Oncode Accelerator Foundation, explains:

By innovating the process, we can better predict which therapies are most likely to succeed. This saves time and costs in the preclinical phase and reduces the risk of failure in expensive clinical trials. As a result, new medicines become not only more effective but potentially also more accessible, affordable, and better tailored to the patients who benefit most.
That is the focus of the Oncode Accelerator program: innovating the preclinical process. The mission of Oncode Accelerator is to optimize and accelerate the development of new cancer drugs through public-private partnerships—for the benefit of patients of all ages. To make this mission possible, Oncode Accelerator has been awarded €325 million from the Dutch National Growth Fund, disbursed in phases. With support from the National Growth Fund, Oncode Accelerator has built infrastructure in the first phase of the program using innovative models that place the patient at the center of the early development process. By applying innovations such as artificial intelligence, organoids (lab-grown mini-organs derived from patients), and the use of data and biological materials from various patient cohorts, Oncode Accelerator is revolutionizing the process. In the words of Friso Smit, COO of the Oncode Accelerator Foundation:
“In the first phase of the program, thanks to the support of the National Growth Fund, we’ve been able to build on the existing scientific expertise and infrastructure in the Netherlands, partly established by our sister organisation Oncode Institute. This is already elevating research into new medicines. In doing so, we not only strengthen the Netherlands’ competitive position in cancer research but also attract new investors and partners to develop new drugs with us.”
More than 35 partners have now joined the Oncode Accelerator program. The innovated infrastructure will be used in the next phase to develop new therapies and demonstrate the added value of the applied innovations. The first two projects—both focused on developing therapeutic vaccines—have already started.
With follow-up funding, Oncode Accelerator can fully leverage the innovative infrastructure it has built. By attracting more partners in the coming years to jointly develop new therapies that reach patients faster, a major step is being taken toward improved treatments for cancer patients—made possible by the National Growth Fund’s confidence in the program’s approach and impact.

Het Nationaal Groeifonds heeft een positief advies afgegeven voor een tweede financieringsronde van €123 miljoen voor het Oncode Accelerator-programma, wat vandaag goedgekeurd is door de ministerraad. Deze erkenning bevestigt het vertrouwen in de aanpak en impact van het programma, dat zich richt op het versnellen en verbeteren van de ontwikkeling van nieuwe therapieën tegen kanker.
Nederland behoort tot de wereldtop in kankeronderzoek. Toch duurt de ontwikkeling van nieuwe therapieën tegen kanker gemiddeld vier tot zes jaar voordat deze de patiënt bereikt in de eerste klinische studies. Bovendien brengt deze vroege fase van geneesmiddelenontwikkeling aanzienlijke risico’s met zich mee. Er liggen echter duidelijke kansen om dit proces te verbeteren. Arnoud Huisman, CEO van Stichting Oncode Accelerator, zegt hierover:
“We streven naar een toekomst waarin het preklinische ontwikkelingstraject van therapieën tegen kanker veel sneller en efficiënter verloopt. Door het proces te innoveren, kunnen we beter voorspellen welke therapieën het meest succesvol zijn. Hiermee besparen we tijd en kosten in de preklinische fase en verlagen we de kans dat nieuwe therapieën in dure klinische studies falen. Daarmee worden nieuwe medicijnen niet alleen effectiever, maar mogelijk ook toegankelijker, betaalbaarder en beter afgestemd op de patiënt die er het meest van profiteert.”
Daar zet het Oncode Accelerator-programma op in: innovatie van het preklinische proces. De missie van Oncode Accelerator is dan ook om, door het aangaan van publiek-private samenwerkingen, de ontwikkeling van nieuwe geneesmiddelen tegen kanker te optimaliseren en te versnellen – ten behoeve van patiënten van alle leeftijden. Om deze missie mogelijk te maken heeft Oncode Accelerator, 325 miljoen euro toegezegd gekregen vanuit het Nationaal Groeifonds, dat in verschillende fasen wordt uitgekeerd. Met de steun van het Nationaal Groeifonds heeft Oncode Accelerator in de eerste fase van het programma infrastructuur gebouwd met innovatieve modellen, waarbij de patiënt al vroeg in het ontwikkelingsproces centraal staat. Door toepassing van innovaties als kunstmatige intelligentie, organoïden (in het lab gekweekte mini-organen afkomstig van patiënten), en het gebruik van data en lichaamsmaterialen uit verschillende patiënten cohorten, innoveert Oncode Accelerator het proces. In de woorden van Friso Smit, COO van Stichting Oncode Accelerator:
“In de eerste fase van het programma, dankzij de steun van het Nationaal Groeifonds, hebben we kunnen voortbouwen op de bestaande wetenschappelijke expertise & infrastructuur in Nederland, mede neergezet door Oncode Institute. Daarmee tillen we het onderzoek naar nieuwe medicijnen nu al naar een hoger niveau. Zo versterken we niet alleen de concurrentiepositie van Nederland op het gebied van onderzoek naar kanker, maar trekken we ook nieuwe investeerders&partners aan om samen met ons nieuwe geneesmiddelen te ontwikkelen.”
Inmiddels zijn er ruim 35 partners aangesloten bij het Oncode Accelerator-programma en wordt de verbeterde infrastructuur in de vervolgfase van het programma gebruikt om daadwerkelijk nieuwe therapieën te ontwikkelen en daarmee de toegevoegde waarde van de gebruikte innovaties te laten zien. De eerste twee projecten, beiden gericht op ontwikkeling van therapeutische vaccins, zijn inmiddels van start gegaan.
Met vervolgfinanciering kan Oncode Accelerator de opgebouwde innovatieve infrastructuur maximaal benutten. Door de komende jaren meer partners aan te trekken om gezamenlijk nieuwe therapieën te ontwikkelen die sneller hun weg naar de patiënt vinden, wordt een belangrijke stap gezet richting verbeterde behandelingen voor patiënten met kanker. Mogelijk gemaakt dankzij het vertrouwen van het Nationaal Groeifonds in de aanpak en impact van het programma.
