UPyTher’s Demonstrator Project: From Fundamental Science to a New Platform for Cancer Therapy
Peritoneal metastases are notoriously difficult to treat. They arise when cancer cells spread into the abdominal cavity, forming many small tumors. For patients with peritoneal metastases, treatment options are scarce, outcomes are often poor, and many are left with little more than palliative care. Can we do better for these patients? The team at UPyTher, a start-up company out of TU Eindhoven that recently kicked off a collaboration with Oncode Accelerator, is convinced that we can. -
Where Technology Meets Biology: Creating New Possibilities for Cancer Vaccines
The cells within your body don’t operate in isolation. Just like humans do on social media, cells are constantly communicating status updates. But instead of publishing status updates to the internet, cells leave tiny clues on their surfaces about what’s going on inside — molecular whispers saying that everything is fine, or that something has gone wrong. In turn, the immune system is constantly scanning these communications to distinguish healthy cells from those that are damaged, infected, or cancerous. For scientists, learning to read these molecular status updates opens the possibility of designing therapies that can teach the immune system to recognize and attack tumors with precision. Fabio Marino, a scientist working within the Oncode Accelerator ecosystem, is at the forefront of understanding this molecular language and harnessing it for the development of new cancer therapies. -
Bridging the Gap From Biochemistry to Patients
Kinases are a family of proteins that play a critical role in nearly every process essential for life. They are also key targets in cancer therapy. But designing drugs that selectively interact with the right kinase — without blocking other kinases, which can lead to side effects for patients — remains a major challenge. Drawing on experience from both academia and industry to tackle this challenge, Joel Rüegger and colleagues developed CellEKT: a platform that allows researchers to study how drugs behave in living systems, offering scientists a better tool for testing drug selectivity and potential side effects. The overarching goal with CellEKT is clear: to give drug developers the tools to select the most promising drug candidates early on, to deliver safer and more effective therapies to patients, faster.

As a partner of Oncode Accelerator, TNO brings world-class translational technology and AI-driven insights to the oncology ecosystem. From Complex Chemistry to Clinical Trials: Spotlight on Symeres
Symeres is a transatlantic CRO/CDMO with expertise spanning early discovery to GMP drug substance and drug product capabilities. The company also has deep experience in the development of small molecule-based therapeutics. In the context of cancer therapies, Rutger Folmer, Director Medicinal Chemistry at Symeres, is no stranger to the complexities and long timelines involved in bringing a drug from an early-stage idea all the way to clinical trials. By sharing his expertise as a partner within the Oncode Accelerator cancer research and development ecosystem, Rutger hopes to help scientists overcome those challenges. -
From Data to Decisions: SkylineDx and the Art of Patient Stratification
Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all “blockbuster” therapies, oncology is moving to a more personalized approach. To select the best therapy for each patient, it is useful to apply molecular diagnostics that answer three critical questions: Do you have the disease? If yes, how will you fare? And, most importantly, which treatment is right for you? Developing diagnostics that can answer these questions not only requires scientific innovation, but careful attention to regulatory requirements, economic feasibility, and real-world clinical needs. We dive into this challenge with Domenico Bellomo, Director of Bioinformatics at SkylineDx.
